Trump canceled his annual plan to spend Thanksgiving at Mar-a-Lago, as attendees describe a ‘bunker mentality’ at the White House
President Donald Trump canceled his annual plans to spend Thanksgiving at his Mar-a-Lago resort, as his aides described a “bunker mentality” at the White House.
Trump has kept a low profile since his electoral defeat to President-elect Joe Biden, making few public appearances but maintaining his usual stream of tweets.
Trump was scheduled to travel to Florida next week, but on Tuesday night, Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for First Lady Melania Trump, tweeted that the Trumps had decided to stay in the White House for the holidays.
“Christmas schedule update: @POTUS and @flotus will celebrate Thanksgiving at @WhiteHouse this year,” he wrote.
Trump has refused to grant the election, unsubstantiated alleging that voter fraud was widespread. Insider and Decision Desk HQ called for Biden’s election on November 6, while other media outlets made the same call on November 7.
Numerous reports have detailed how Trump has simply cooked in the Oval Office and the White House, relentlessly watching the news and publicly claiming that he had won.
Trump’s calendar on Wednesday did not show “public events,” the 11th day since his election.
Trump’s advisers told The New York Times that the “president’s mood is often bleak,” and a White House official told CNN before the new Thanksgiving plan was announced: ” It feels like a shelter mentality. ”
The Trump campaign has filed several lawsuits challenging the election results in many states, and Trump maintains that he will reveal what he claims is election fraud. So far, he has only won one lawsuit, in Pennsylvania, and his attorney has said the litigation will not affect Biden’s victory.
Trump believes his supporters want him to “keep fighting” for the outcome, an aide told The Washington Post.
“He’s more ingrained in his position than he was at the beginning,” the person said. “He believes that this is his base for 2024, and that half the country are warriors fighting for him, and that he has to keep fighting.”
Trump usually spends Thanksgiving at Mar-a-Lago with his family and often plays golf while there. Last year he secretly traveled to Afghanistan to spend Thanksgiving with US troops, even though his official schedule placed him at his resort.
The same weekend, Trump claimed that the Liberals were trying to change the name for Thanksgiving, but vowed “we won’t change it.”
